Umbrellas can seem rather mundane and tend only to get our attention when they annoy us by blowing inside out when we most need them – on a wet and windy day. However, both umbrellas and parasols in fact have a long and interesting history and culture. Michael Blackman will show us different facets of the story while showing his extensive collection of philatelic material, in addition to ephemera, postcards, poster stamps and more.

A stamp collector for 70 years, Michael Blackman became interested in umbrellas more than 50 years ago when looking into the technology of manufacturing them as part of his work. His first thematic collection was heraldry; in addition he has several country collections. He is a member of the British Thematic Association, Royal Philatelic Society London, ATA and others. He and his wife Hilary live in Kent on the southeastern edge of London, UK.
