A Nostalgic Tour of Cleveland

Join your fellow ATA members for a full day tour that will take you down memory lane. Beginning with a visit to an historic 100-year-old building, moving on to achievements in space, and ending with a remembrance of music of the past, this tour will be filled with interesting attractions. Our walking tour involves short distances, with the whole day totaling just two miles.

The cost of the tour is $40 per person, which covers the docent fees and admission ticket to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Lunch is dutch treat. There is an optional add-on dinner stop, which is also dutch treat.

Deadline to register is July 20, 2023.

8:45 a.m. Meet in Westin Hotel Downtown lobby.

9:00 a.m. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland: Learning Center and Money Museum

Have you ever wondered how money works or what the Federal Reserve does as part of the Central Bank of the US? Learn the answers to these and other questions you may have about money.  See why we use it, and why it looks the way it does. Take pictures with the money tree, trade coconuts on Barter Island, identify counterfeit bills, and even make your own money! Over 30 hands-on exhibits focus on the history of money, its effects on societies and cultures, and its central role in peoples’ lives.

The 100-year-old Italian Renaissance Federal Reserve building is celebrating its centennial this year. We may have the opportunity to see the original 91-ton vault door, the largest in the world.

Our one hour tour will be led by docents. All visitors must be registered prior to the tour and must bring picture identification to be admitted. Photos are allowed in the lobby and museum, but not elsewhere.

10:30 a.m. International Women’s Air and Space Museum

We’ll explore the amazing achievements of women in aviation and aerospace at this acclaimed museum, where we’ll have a 70-90 minute staff-led tour. Photos are permitted.

This museum brings history to life with displays on famous women, including Amelia Earhart, Ruth Nichols, Bessie Coleman, Jackie Cochran and others. There are also displays of Mercury 13, the 20th anniversary of the International Space Station, and the Sally Ride postage stamp.

We’ll learn the stories of former NASA astronaut Pam Melroy and Major Sheila Thompson, an Air Force navigator. Many of these topics shown in the museum are familiar to stamp collectors because they appear on US stamps.

12:15 p.m.   Arrive at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for lunch and a musical afternoon

Nonrefundable advance tickets, with timed admittance are included in our tour price. We will have a dutch treat lunch in the café. You are free to explore this exciting six-level museum on your own all afternoon.

Highlights include the Signature Gallery with year-by-year list and autographs of inductees, along with their career defining playlists. The section on the 2022 inductees (including Dolly Parton, Eminem, Carly Simon, Lionel Richie and many others) includes gear from their stages and studios, clothing from tours, handwritten lyrics, set lists and more.

The Legends of Rock exhibit features the most iconic moments in rock history and displays of handwritten drafts of hit singles, performance outfits and instruments used in famous concerts. The exhibit shows rock and roll’s trendsetting importance in the fashion industry. You’ll see diverse exhibits, featuring Rod Stewart, The Pretenders, Blondie, Beastie Boys and others. There are major sections on The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, U2 and the Doors. The diverse representation of artists in this exhibition are exemplary of rock’s enduring power to connect us all.

This incredible museum will take you on a walk back in time, while entertaining you with the performers and their music, beginning in the 1950s, when rock and roll burst on the scene.

5:00 p.m. The museum closes.

5:00 p.m. Optional dutch treat dinner at Nuevo Modern Mexican and Tequila Bar. We’ll walk back to the hotel after dinner, or you can share a cab.

You may choose to end your visit whenever you choose, and walk back to the Westin Hotel Downtown, about a 15-minute walk.
