The World of Chemistry on Postage Stamps

    with Dan Rabinovich, Ph.D.

Tuesday, November 4, 7:00 p.m. Eastern via Zoom

A surprisingly large number of stamps have been issued to commemorate scientific discoveries or to honor well-known scientists.  This presentation will feature postage stamps pertaining to the history of chemistry, the discovery and sources of several chemical elements, the development of the periodic table, chemical formulas and structures, laboratory equipment, biochemistry, and various aspects of the chemical industry.

Dan Rabinovich was born and raised in Lima, Peru, where he developed a keen interest in stamp collecting at an early age and later obtained a B.S. degree in chemistry from the Catholic University.  After receiving a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Columbia University (1994) and carrying out postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1994-1996), he joined the Department of Chemistry at UNC Charlotte, where he stayed for the next 25 years.  In July 2021, he assumed the position of Professor and Associate Dean at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (in Greensboro, NC), where he continues working on synthetic and structural inorganic, bioinorganic, and organometallic chemistry, as documented in some 60 peer-reviewed publications.  He is also passionate about science communication, the history of chemistry, and the application of postage stamps as teaching tools, which he uses in a variety of outreach activities.
